Probably, and it probably only announces the floor you are at, maybe even a 'mind the gap' or 'watch your step'. It would be lovely if it could be cognizant and tell the couple in the back exploring each other's throats with their tongues to "Knock it off", or say 'gezundheit' when someone sneezes.

LOL--there already are..at least in YVR(Vancouver airport). And they say really intelligent things in both official language..like "going up" "going down"..in most cases there are only two floors...so you already know whether you are going up or down.

I've often used an elevator (UK: 'lift') that has a 'voice' device inside it. When the elevator button is pressed, the 'voice' says, 'Lift going up/down', and also says, 'Doors opening/closing.' The 'voice' also announces the floor number, 'Ground floor/1st floor/second floor.' The building in which the elevator is situated, is a resource centre used by people with disabilities. The 'voice' mechanism is useful for people who are blind, or have a visual impairment.

The elevator in the building where I work was brand new, and it said crisply "First floor" "Doors Closing" "Going up" "Doors opening" and so on. Now after a few years it seems to have got bored. It goes, in a deep depression, "Mawah wah", "Mwah wahah", "Maaa" sounding a bit like Charlie Brown's teacher! And sometimes it just won't move at all.

Are you the guy who hit the television?

In the hospital there is..lift going down...typically in a sexy female voice if you know what i mean, also talking escalators now, reminding people they are coming to the end of the track!
-
If you mean an elevator that would tell the floor its at then yes, some elevators are also programmed to say more than just the floor number all that counts on the client's demand

There are Elevator Programs where you can speak. http://www.hilton-elevator.com/gm1.htm

-
Yes! There is this elevator in a building near me, that says "approaching floor 5" and stuff. It says welcome when you enter it, but nothing when you exit it. pretty funny.
-
