Questions like this make me question my belief in mankind.

I believe it was something called ironwood. I don't know anything about it because I'm not from the East. The ship was designed with extra bracing which, combined with the exterior hardwood caused most cannonballs to bounce off. That ship saw action during the war of 1812 and mostly succeeded by barely escaping the British a couple of times, once during a calm spell they literally had row boats out and outrowed the British.
