  • Unless you have mad talent and can make money from paintings, I would choose something that you can fall back on that can earn you money.
  • If you enjoy it and think you can get a half-decent grade then sure. To be honest - the GCSE subjects you choose have very little relevance to anything in later life. The only time I have ever been asked about them was when I applied to do my A-levels. Most jobs don't care what subjects you took so much as the percentage of A-C grades you got. So yes - if you fancy it, go ahead, it won't do you any harm - you'll be taking several other subjects at the same time anyway. I can't say I particularly enjoyed GCSE art - it was very constraining and not terribly creative. I did however really enjoy A-Level art, which allows you much more freedom.
  • Art is a very important subject. It is in fact one of the biggest earners for this country and should not be dismissed. You can follow many career paths e.g landscape gardening, television and media, photography, book illustration, technical illustration, teaching, art therapist, architecture, hairdressing, fashion etc etc. There are many more. If you search on the web for art careers or look on the connexions website you will find out more information. Being able to visualise things, read visual information etc is also a very important part of many careers.
