I'd like to see it become more open. I think of Canada as a modern, well behaved country with good laws & people. Surely we can do better. The border crossing should be quick & foster increased movement & trade.

The border isn't open for just one reason, xenophobia. In europe they have lowered the borders between countries under the Schengen treaty. While Canada might be open to such discussions, the US currently seems to think that any country is a threat to it and therefore Canadians are being treated as a threat as well. Wonder how well they treat their enemies if this is how your neighbours and best friends are being treated.
