My 2003 Explorer XLT is making a thumping noise from rear driver's-side inside panel where lock button is located, and now the electric door lock buttons quit working. Are the problems related, and what's the thumping noise?

I have the same problem with my 2003 Explorer. The thumping noise seems linked the AC/Heating System. When the AC/heat is off then the thumping sound is faint and keeps to the beat of a turn signal. When the air flow is increased the thumping sound grows. I wish I new what is causing the noise...it's driving me crazy.

I'm considering buying my brother's 2002 Explorer....and it has this issue. Did anyone figure out what this was and if so....how much did it cost to fix it? Thanks! John
