How many rounds would YOU like to fight a Championship Boxer before you collect your $6 million and go home?
Personally I would just stick my chin out, have them hit me once and call it a day. :)
After Ray Mancini fought the South Korean champ Duk Koo Kim, and in the 14th round knocked him out and eventually the guy died from head trauma, they shortened the fights to 12 rounds since most severe injuries, so they say, occur in the late rounds. While they have made the sport safer with refs stopping many fights pre-maturely now as well, it has taken something away from the sport and has somewhat "de-balled" the game. It is a risky profession, if you don't want to be a part of it you could play tennis or golf without much risk. I think the situation was overblown and one tragic event not something that normally happened in the ring. Kim had a heart of a lion, and if he was less of a fighter may have just been knocked out earlier in the fight. It was a great fight, and sadly we lost a guy who would have been a great in the sport.
To many people were getting injured, in a way that their recovery was difficult.

You're reading Why did championship boxing matches go from 15 rounds to only 12?
Comments
It's hard to judge modern day boxers (12 round guys) with the greats of the past that endured the 15 rounds. For the money these guys are making, they should not be coddled. I wonder if an old school champion who would only give matches to challengers willing to fight 15 rounds could get sanctioned? I bet they would, I don't think there is any rule that states that a championship fight can only last 12 rounds. Can anybody substantiate my statement?

When Kim Duk Koo died after being stopped in the 14th round against Ray Mancini in November 1982, the WBC shortened the limit to 12 rounds three months later. The WBO and WBA did so in 1988 and the IBF in 1989.
Also helped the TV stations, as you can fit a 12-rounder into an hour on TV.
