  • It's not an issue that can be "fixed" exactly, but it can be managed. First, if you drink or use milk, buy lactose free milk. Lactaid is a brand that's pretty common, but there are other companies that produce a lactose free milk. It's usually available in whatever kind you usually drink - whole, 2%, 1% or skim. If you have symptoms when you eat other dairy products (yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc...) go to the drug store and look for a product called Lactaid. It comes in either Ultra or Fast-Act. The Ultra is a pill, the Fast Act is a chewable. They both work great, you just take/eat one with your first bite of dairy food/drink. They help break down the lactose sugars in the dairy products so that they don't cause the symptoms normally experienced when you eat dairy. I've been lactose intolerant since high school (possibly before that too - but that's when I realized what it was!) and always keep the lactaid pills nearby, so that I don't have to avoid dairy products. They work great (and the milk is good too).
  • Other than buying "special" dairy products, I wanted a quick fix, so I used Lactaid pills, prior to eating dairy, which worked. I'm not sure of your level of intolerance, so it might not work.
  • A friend of mine is highly lacto, but loves cheese (especially the soft full fat creamy ones like brie). She gets pills from her doctor that she takes before she eats any dairy and that works for her. Sorry, I don't know the name of the pillsm, but I'm sure your doctor would!
  • Visit a dairy farm and witness how they get the milk. I'm sure you'd no longer "love" it.
  • It can't be fixed but you can still have a normal life. Just make all of your homemade stuff that has milk with Lactaid brand milk. Lactaid also makes some flavors of lactose free ice cream, cottage cheese, and I think also yogurt. Visit the Lactaid website. If your local store doesn't have Lactaid products, you can print a form to fill out and give to the manager. Also they have Lactaid tablets you can take with your first bite of dairy.
