That pretty much sums it up. People used to call it Japanimation but I think it just got shortened to anime.

Well, as I see it, 'anime' is "Japanese Animation", but is sometimes applied to all animation that follows the typical sort of style (even if it's got nothing at all to do with Japan)

Technically, yes -- it's just the Japanese word for animated films. The difference is that the Japanese tend to take animated films as much more of a "serious" artform, and tend to make films with more sophisticated plots and characterizations than the "kids' stuff" that Hollywood tends to churn out.

In Japanese, animation is written "animeshon". They just took off the "-shon". So basically, it's the Japanese version of an English word.
