This is a north american rule, or for any countries where right-hand driving is the norm. You will notice that all exits, rest stops, runaway lanes, etc are on the right hand side of the road. With the exception of downtown, most often the left lane is free and clear all the way down making it ideal for people who want to pass or test their luck and speed.

    Hope this helps,
    Good Luck

The right lane is for people who want to drive slower. You should drive in the left-hand lane (inside) if the road ahead is clear then move into the right lane if a vehicle wants to go faster than you. You should not cut in front of someone who is driving in the left lane. Stay in the right lane until the left lane is clear again. If people did this there would be less accidents on the highways. Exit lanes are always on the right so it makes sense to stay in the right-hand lane if you plan to exit.

In the UK the reverse is true. Unlike many areas of Europe, Canadian and much of the US traffic seems to be allowed to overtake on either side, even from a slower lane. In Canada the rules are that the faster traffic stays in the inside lane and that slower traffic should not pass them and then cut in but those rules are rarely enforced.
