In general practice, the call of "At-Ease" is used when officers at or below the rank of lieutenant colonel (O-5) enter the facility. This varies from base to base, service to service, but most dining facilities adher to this protocol. At the sound of "At-Ease" service members cease conversations and activities, waiting for "Carry On" from the entering officer. When a full Colonel (O-6) or general officer enters the facility, Attention is called. All activities cease; all personnel come to attention (seated personnel are not normally required to rise, but simply come to attention seated), and again await the officer's response. Most officers release the service members immediately with "Carry On", but there are a few Prima Donna-types who like to make this a grand entrance.

Only Attention is used when any officer enters a room! You must stand at attention until you are ordered to do otherwise! When an NCO enters a room you are to announce him or her by calling Stand at Ease! You must remain at ease until either the NCO or another officer orders you to do otherwise!
