Most people seem to get a hint that there is something wrong with their memory early on. My MIL knew years ago and would do certain games and things to keep her remembering. She took ginkgo way before it was commonly used. But now it's 20 years later and she recognizes that she knows people but the memory is gone, she doesn't know anything any more:-( After awhile they really don't know how bad it is because they can't remember what they've lost.

Oh, I know I suffer from pre-senile dementia just like most people. lol
-
I hope not. If I am going to end up like that I would prefer to be oblivious to it.

most people know that their mind isn't working quite correctly...my mother had dementia...

I'm not aware of it at all. but might very well be a long term sufferer.

I have a memory of my grandmother that will haunt me for the rest of my life. We took her to the hospital (for some other reason) and the doctor asked her what state we were in. The expression on her face was pure sadness and humiliation. "I..I don't know..I should know that, shouldn't I?" It was all I could do to not cry.

In the early stages yes, My Mother in Law had many windows of lucidity at the outset. It is very frightening to know it is happening.

our president is one. I dont think so tho.
-
yes, but those in early onset tend to hide it (making excuses and feigning stress) instead of seeking help and medication.

I suppose it's different with each person, just most things. From what I've seen, the early stages are the worst, because she could just barely remember things, and said "It's right on the tip of my tongue, I just can't quite get it", and then later it got so bad that she got lost in the hall on the way to the bedroom.

my great grandmother had dementia. It was so sad. She would sit in front of the window everyday amd would ask us what the weather was like. She would also watch the same prerecorded show every night and not realize that she watched it the night before. It was very sad.
