  • Least expensive power you can generate yourself is probably solar. The technology continues to get better for it, increasing the KW you can generate in the same space as time goes on; however, wind power is probably the least expensive power that will generate 24-hours a day, but you would have to live in a more windy environment.
  • dont know your area so cant comment on contractors etc but design wise you cant really do much better then underground-second choice would be earth sheltered but i would go with an underground design first---dont have to dig down can built the earth up---just my thoughts and hope this helps---smile and enjoy the night

  • Research ICF blocks. There are popular and abundant in Canada. Also look into geothermal heat systems. These two products together can provide and extremely comfortable and energy efficient home. In most building codes in the states it is becoming code to also install a mechanical air exchanger to filter clean air into the home and remove the bad.   • Build underground and experience the quiet solitude of an optimal home! With an underground home you could live at the end of a runway and still not hear them when they take off!
  • You can look into passive solar, but they aren't very attractive. I would recommend solar panels to heat your hot water, and supply electricity. Also there are lots of options for insualtion, like recycled paper and denim for instance that is easier on the environment and high quality.
