  • hahaha very funny. where on earth would they invent a term like that?
  • I never heard that before but it does come up in an internet search, though it doesn't specify what age it starts at. It mentions Halle Berry and Jene Seymour.
  • I don't think that is a common medical term. I work for the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development and I've never heard that term. I tried to google it and the only hit I got was Halle Berry's quote from In Style magazine and a blogger who claims anyone over 35 is having a geriatric pregnancy. But then of course, maybe the term is in it's infancy... so to speak.
  • In fact, when I was pregnant at age 35, I was labeled an elderly mother, as was any pregnant woman over 35. I have the interesting honor of having each of my sons at each end of the line, I was a teen mom, and 16 years later, an elderly mom.
  • Yes, it is. Because 40 is an old age to have a child. By that time your eggs are 40 years old, and subject to deterioration, producing a range of defects such as Down Syndrome, and producing many more miscarriages. Women are created to have children in their late teens to mid-thirties. After that, things begin to go wrong. Geriatric means old age, which, for the eggs, is true.
  • Actually it is a common term and frequently used. Just the public was not made aware of it. A geriatric pregnancy can range from an expectant mother's age to be 35 to 39. With an expected carry date from age 36 to 40 or so. It has been used for many years. Especially in written insurance policies. Most insurance policies cover additional testing for "geriatric pregnacies" for women over this age. Reason being is simple: more problems happen with your over 35-40. Simple statistics. Geriatric is a term given to the propensity for health related problems that occurs in respect to aging. To the person above that "works for National Institute for Child Health and Human Development": I am shocked you have never heard the term before. Perhaps your job requirements keep you outside common terminology within the health and insurance fields. This term has been common in my field of work for 9 years or so...
  • Yes, makes you feel so good to be pregnant doesn't it. Your all happy to be having a baby and they are telling you your old!
  • I have never heard that term and I had my last at 38 and so have several of my friends. The term around here is "advanced maternal age". I would go ballistic if I heard the term "geriatric" pregnancy! lol! First of all the 35 year old age limit is old school and while its more risky to have kids over 40 MANY women do it and have healthy pregnancies and healthy kids.
