Although it's visited by a lot of tourists, you'd be missing a spectacular experience if you didn't go to Pompeii. Then after Pompeii, you would have to go the museum in Naples to see a lot of the artifacts from Pompeii!

Live by this old adage, "When in Rome do as the Romans do". The best way to find out about a country is befriend the locals and speak the language, this will open up a whole new outlook of Italy.

Come on up to Switzerland! Theres great stuff to do in the South, like in Lugano, Lausanne or Bellinzona. They are not touristy at all, but they are relatively close, and offer lots of culture and fun.

You can take the metro from Rome to Lake Bracciano which is a lovely spot all year round. I also adored going to Vinci (yes, as in Leonardo da). There are plenty of things to do in Rome that are away from tourists as well. You'll know you're out of the tourist areas when the portions of food get smaller as well as the prices. A really common thing to do is to go to Piazza del Popolo and just walk down Via del Corso with some friends. There's a theater that plays movies in English there and no cars are allowed. It ends around Piazza Venezia and the Wedding Cake. It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
