  • Simply put, the helmet was necessary to pilot the aircraft. Inside the helmet was the communication gear, and the goggles were attached to helmet as well. This question is usually asked for its "joke" value, since it was a fact that the pilot was on a suicide mission. Rest assured, the helmet did absolutely no good in making the mission "survivable".
  • World War II pilots including the Kamikaze did not wear the hard helmets of today's military pilots. Rather they wore leather flight caps. For an excellent photo of kamikaze pilots in their flight gear go to http://www.dayofthekamikaze.com/japanese.html The first hard helmets worn by military pilots to protect their heads were the same as those worn by soldiers.
  • WWII pilot "helmets" were not really helmets, but rather leather caps. This is true for almost all air forces. Bomber crews, who flied slower planes and had to deal with AA fires would don special armored helmets ( which served as the basis for some of the helmets the Death Star soldiers wore in the original Star Wars Eps IV and V) As the person before me wrote, these contained headphones and other items necessary for flying the plane.
  • Good question!! I think it's so they can carry out their mission. If they hit their head on the way and become unconcious and crash, then they have not fulfilled their mission and therefore wasted their life (and a plane). Here's the wikipedia page on kamikazes, it's pretty interesting- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamikaze
  • Helmets do more than just protect....they hold microphones, earpiecses, breathing tubes, etc...They allow the pilot to stay concious, in control, and informed while flying...Kamikaze pilots still need to be concious in order to hit their targets
  • Pilots didn't wear helmets back then. They might have worn something that was cloth and leather that housed their communications, but they weren't really helmets.
  • hahaha this is a classic retorical question... I was gonna say just like the top answer, I think they have microphones and stuff going on inside thier helmets.
  • Here's a hypothetical situation: Two kamakaze pilots are on a mission, pilot A wears a helmet, pilot B doesn't. On thier way to the mission they hit bad weather with severe turbulence, pilot A hits his head on a panel, gets a small bruise and makes it to the mission where he intentionally crashes into a ship, sinking it. Pilot B hits his head on a panel, gets a concussion, and crashes into open ocean doing no good (or for us, nothing bad).
  • Hey, if you were going to die for your country and you wanted to wear a helmit, I wouldn't be the one to tell you no.
  • Because they initially weren't kamikaze pilots, and if there is some kind of accident, it's important for the pilot to remain alive -> To suicide with another plane in an aircraft carrier.
  • Because they have every intention of crashing and being reckless.
  • I don't think any pilot jumped into a cockpit with 100% certainty they might not make it back. Many of them did. "When you eliminate all thoughts about life and death, you will be able to totally disregard your earthly life. This will also enable you to concentrate your attention on eradicating the enemy with unwavering determination, meanwhile reinforcing your excellence in flight skills." (A paragraph from the kamikaze pilots' manual.) "The tokkōtai pilot's manual also explained how a pilot may turn back if the pilot could not a locate a target and that "[a pilot] should not waste [his] life lightly." However, one pilot who continuously came back to base was shot after his ninth return." Source and much more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamikaze
  • Thanks for the chuckle:)
  • hell i duno, why do sky divers wear helmets?
  • To protect them until they get to the target. Sorry, no joke to add at this time, but give me a minute.
  • Duplicate question. Did these not show up when you asked this one? http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/541 http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/348272
  • To make war movies cooler?
  • I guess it would be standard suicide bomber apparel.
  • To be properly dressed to be with their ancestors
  • So that they can stay alive until their DPS. (Designated Point of Suicide)
  • So they canc ommunicate with their CO's
  • It's "kamikaze". And they're not just dying, they're dying in order to take something else down. So they wear the helmets to keep them safe until they get to their target.
  • To keep their heads warm.
  • To protect them en route to their destination.
  • They also had headphones in them, although I'm not sure what there was to talk about.
  • To give the illusion of "I plan on living"? So nobody knows they're kamikazes
  • for the irony
  • They wear them so that they don't accidentally hit their heads on something and pass out and lose their way. Also, the helmets protect them until they are at their destination, for only there can they die as they were told.
  • Some kamikaze pilots wore headbands called 'hachimaki' instead of the helmet. The hachimaki had symbols on them, saying things like "I get you SOBs" or "You will die miserably" It didn't help much, no-one ever found the hachimakis to read what was written on them.
  • I suppose they wore helmets so that in between the takeoff and their unfashionable landing, they didn't jeopardize the mission by bumping their heads.
  • Because the radio mike and speakers were in the helmets. They might not have found the targets and had to go back, they might need to talk to each other to agree targets, the plane might have problems which would stop it reaching the target...
  • Because they were stupid.
  • In case they changed their mind mid-flight? Abort! Eject!...shit, i don't have a helmet :(
  • What pilots wore during WWII were not really helmets. They were canvas or leather hats that contained the headphones for their radios. They really were not meant to protect the head. They were used to help facilitate communicational.
  • (I'm sorry but I can't resist...) Is it because they didn't want to blow their tops???
  • Mostly for communications, but also to prevent them being killed before they reached their target!
  • My daughters bedroom!
  • Right now the living room.
  • My crafts room. I was working in there last night and have not cleaned up my mess yet.
  • I have kids. None of them stay clean for long. Naturally the worst rooms are their bedrooms. It's unbelievable how bad they can get.
  • Shoe and store room
  • Im sorry to disappoint you cotton but there are no dirty rooms in my house lol
  • Our store room. It gets cleaned the least because it's really full of cartons and tubs of stuff and it's hard to clean around them.
