  • For one example, the Black Death killed approximately one third of the population of Europe. When the Black Death had passed, there was a shortage of labourers to work the land. The remaining labourers were therefore able to ask for higher wages and for civil rights greater than the effective slavery which had existed before. The Black Death therefore triggered the first development sin proper human rights in western civilisation. At the other end of the spectrum, Isaac Newton fled to the country to escape the Plague of 1665 and, while in the quiet of the country, invented his Theory of Gravity when an apple fell on his head. Or so the tale is told. Western diseases such as measles and smallpox decimated the Azttec and many other Early American civilisations, making them easy to conquer. The may have exterminated the Mississippiean civilisation before there was any need to conquer it.
