Water molds are filamentous and saprotrophic. Even in recent biology textbooks, they are classified with the fungi. Why are they no longer classified with fungi when their predominant features are fungus like?

They are only superficially similar and have evolved separately. Their cell walls are composed of cellulose rather than chitin. They have diploid nuclei (paired chromosomes, like we do), whereas fungi have haploid nuclei.
