I guess I would look at which countries you would be employable/be able to get a visa for. It is not as easy as just deciding to move to another country and then you automatically are able to work...

Houston, Texas. It is one of the lowest cost cities in the United States. We live outside of Houston and have researched other places to live to save money. Everywhere we interested in (Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Los Angeles) were much more expensive. We are staying here. Generally outside of the metrolpolitan areas are going to be cheaper, but jobs are lower paying. This is why so many Americans commute. But commuting is not mandatory, obviously, nor is it recommended. And Americans love accents, to boot.

Hi Lotty, I am in agreement with you as so many in the UK feel exactly the same way. One statistic that I heard on the BBC last year was that a Britain was leaving the country to live abroad once every three minutes, and by the year 2020 half the population of Britain will not even have been born here. Frightening!!! The only debt that myself and my partner (and the dog) have is our mortgage and we are really struggling. We have our house up for sale at the moment and are moving to Bulgaria as soon as we can. I have been many times and the country itself although still a long way off Britain in living standards is beautiful. The population is only about 8 million and 35% of the country is forest and national park. You can sunbathe in a fantastic climate by the Black Sea in Summer, (May - Oct) and go skiing in the mountains in the Winter. Bottle of good wine £1.50 - Beer around 65p a bottle. I took a party of six out for a three course meal whilst we were there in 2007 and it cost me 48 pounds. Housing is very cheap although you should be prepared to do a little work on nearly every house you buy. You can purchase a three/four bedroom house for as little as 10,000 pounds but be prepared to spend another 10 - 15 on renovation. Most houses come with at least a quarter of an acre of land. A tradesman will cost you 15 pound a day and a laborer 10 pounds. If you decide to buy furniture over there (which I recommend) it will cost you between 3 and 5 thousand pounds for a house package. Council tax on a 50,000 pound house is £1.50 per year (yes that is one pound fifty). There is a little more to buying your property in Bulgaria than in Britain which I suggest you look into if your interested. i.e. you have to set a limited company up to buy a house with land if you are not Bulgarian, but all these regulations are very straight forward. I would strongly advise using a good solicitor to check everything for you. They are not as expensive as Britain. Food is fantastic and nearly everybody grows their own, including grapevines. The country has some of the purest air in the world. There are no prats hanging round the street corners as most of the teenagers are off doing national service. Most big cinemas play the latest films in English with Bulgarian subs. DVD's are dubbed but have English subs. There are no poisonous animals. At the moment the countries infra-structure leaves a little to be desired but since joining the EU community the EU has given them over a billion dollars to give them a kickstart and Holland is paying to transform the Black Sea Coast into top beach resorts. If you ever went to Spain in the late sixties /early seventies you will have a pretty good idea as to what you might expect if you visit. This doesn't apply to the coastal or skiing resorts as they cater for foreign visitors. Most major brands we have here are sold in the large towns and cities and people are very friendly on the whole. the only thing you should be wary of are the Gypsies but they don't really bother anyone. I wouldn't buy a car in Bulgaria as they have usually been badly repaired. Most people travel to Germany to purchase as they are cheaper than the UK. Keep an eye out though as some cars are stolen in Bulgaria and then sold in Germany.(Car parts are expensive) I can really see the country being a top place to live in Europe in the next twenty years, by which time, unless you go soon, you will not be able to afford to buy a house there! House prices went up 70% last year so if your gonna go, you'd better get your skates on. Here are couple of links that may help you. http://www.mybulgaria.info/bulgarian-property-for-sale.html This site is ran by ex-pats and has houses for sale and useful info for you to read. http://www.sofiaecho.com/ This site is the English newspaper that is printed in the capital, Sofia and has very reliable and up to date information. I hope this has given you a little insight into the country although it is brief as I could write a book of info. Regards Craig

I moved to Norway to start a family. It was seriously hard to find a job and definitely not cheap! I agree with most of the posts on here, try finding a job somewhere and moving there. But ask yourself this first, Why do you not have enough money to live on? Can you not cut down on a few luxuries? Maybe get a new job which pays more? Moving country is a seriously difficult thing to do. My advise to you is to look into all available options in Scotland/England before thinking of moving abroad. Good luck

southern spain is cheap and has a very unique lifestyle. its all about quality of life (stress-free)

Lived in New York, London and now Houston. Would seriously consider Houston best place money-wise to live. In terms of aesthetics and culture, Houston is horrible though. There is no zoning, which for those living outside of the US, means that if you want to put a homeless shelter next to a residential neighborhood, there are no regulations to stop you. So, no matter where you live, you are close to the slums. As for other options, I would consider Austin, Dallas or San Antonio in Texas. All have a great culture, no income tax, higher property taxes, but very cheap to live in. I would also put significant praise behind Canada. Also lived a bit just on the US side of the US / Canada border and there is a lot to be said for the Canadian culture and the geography, while cold is great.

I have travel and work in different countries in the world, but the most beautiful is South Africa, especially Western Cape, Cape Town. I have lived there for 7 years. Cheap living, fresh air, wonderful landscapes(sea, mountain, open lands with indigenous vegetation) and English speaking lovely people. I so regret that we had to move-a job transfer. For a retired couple couldn’t be a better place-jobs are few… My house is for sale-the house is in exceptional good condition, with a marvelous garden with irrigation system, absolutely no maintenance required. The area is very nice and quiet with fresh air and country style touch, very safe and lovely neighbors. To live in South Africa is extremely cheap especially for someone with an income of dollars or Euros, I can give you a few examples rates and taxes plus water plus electricity is 60 to 70 Dollars per month for 2 adults. There are a lot of new shopping centers close by which makes the shopping experience a real pleasure. The house is situated at just 700 meters of the popular Zevenwacht wine farm and 1km of the Golf Club. Fruit and Vegetables are always fresh and of good quality as well as extremely cheap-10kg potato bag for $2.5, 1kg apples $0.65, bananas $0.45.. As you can see from the attached pictures, Cape Town is the most beautiful city in South Africa.

If climate is not a factor, Canada will be your best bet. If, however, you want to be happy and warm, I'd go with Spain.

Do you either/both of you have (or can you get) a trade/professional skills or the capital to own a business? Do you care if you live in Europe? What are you language skills (not what you know but what you can learn)? Do you mind living in a third world country? That information would be a start towards getting some reasonable advice.

Check out countries, which best fit your job and your income.

An old filppino colleague of mine always told me that the best way to improve my living standards and quality of life was to move to the Philippines. He reckoned as a British person if you already have a little capital behind you you can make a great life for yourself. I don't know how true that is.

The trick is to continue to get a western earnings level while living in less prosperous countries. There was a family among my kin who worked in the field of international agricultural development, stationed in and near the Indian subcontinent. They lived on a good American salary level and had housing provided. Anything to be bought off the local economy was cheap. They returned to USA every year for lavish vacations, and they accrued a gob of wealth.
