  • One problem with electric cars is the weight of the batteries. Electric motors may be slightly lighter than comparabl internal combustion engines - though I doubt it for the kind of highly tuned high performance engines fittes to supercars. But the batteries needed to power such an engine are much, much heavier than the equivelent tank full of fuel. The batteries needed to give a car a 2-300 mile range would probably double the weight of a supercar, thus halving its acceleration and making it not a supercar at all.
  • Battery technology is the main problem. Recently GM and Nissan have announced development of large Lithium Ion batteries that will power new electric cars in 2010. Lithium Ion batteries are about 1/4 the weight and size of lead acid batteries. This is similar to the reduction of battery size in cell phones when the Lithium Ion type was introduced. The greater power density will allow an electric car travel longer distances at higher speeds before recharging by plugging into your home electric power. And travel interstate distances using an onboard electric generator driven by a small gas or diesel engine turning at a constant speed for highest fuel efficiency. Ford is considering recharging using a Hydrogen fuel cell electric source rather than gas or diesel engine. Either way the key battery break through appears to be in sight.

  • Car companies have known for years how to make a hyper car that gets over 300 mpg with electric motors on all four wheels and reverse polarity braking not pads. I have a magazine I can print the article from and email it to you if you like. In 95 the 3 big car companies were working on electric cars powered with fuel cells to produce the electric current. Was scheduled to be produced by 03. We do have the high breed car made by some auto makers. The car I have the article about has composite body construction (very duratble). Speeds of up to 200 mph. I believe they intend to work this light weight extremely efficient car into the market very gradually. Probably so the oil companies can adjust. Stan
