I don't think I would put it in water. You could put it in a plastic bag with some baking soda...shake...let it sit in the bag with the baking soda to freshen the smell. If there is dirt on it take a damp cloth to wipe it gently after you get the baking soda off of it.

I would take it to someone who is familiar with restoring antiques and ask them. I would be a shame if the bear fell apart.

A stuffed animal from the late 1980's is really not that old, probably stuffed with shredded foam rubber (aka fiberfill) and should be safe to wash and dry in your washer & dryer...but check the tag on his little bottom to see what he's made of and stuffed with-p&l

I wash stuffed animals in a pillowcase in the washer then dry. The pillow case protects the animal.

Be careful. I washed an old teddy bear. The stuffing soured because I couldn't get it dry inside. The bear was ruined. I worked for a month to undo the damage but it was never OK again. I would consider a dry cleaner, an antique restorer, someone who collects old toys professionally,... I like the baking soda idea to refresh it while not doing something can't be undone.
