Only to a certain degree. Most are edited specifically for dramatic effect.

Sure, they reflect reality. Mostly the reality of making TV shows and a good glimpse into the editor's psyches, but a little bit the reality of how people react while watched and under stress, and what they are willing to say when pressed to continually come up with things to say. Also, the extents to which people will go in order to endear themselves to others, and in order to attain the prize money. In terms of reflecting a normal every-day sort of reality, of course they don't. Nobody would watch it if they did. Reality is something we all already know and it's boring.

I don't think reality shows have anything at all to do with reality. I mean..just as an example..who can eat the grossest things without throwing up? Who's reality are we talking about here? I hate "reality" shows.

Often, producers make a point of putting together people of vastly different backgrounds and interests, so they can make "good TV". In those circumstances, it certainly doesn't reflect reality - how often would a council-estate teenage mother, for example, interact with a middle-class business man? And if the "reality shows" are 24/7 affairs, like Big Brother, they definitely don't reflect reality - how often does anyone spend every second of their life surrounded by 10 other people? The only time reality shows could reflect reality is in fly-on-the-wall documentaries - and even then the participants may not act naturally, due to the very presence of the cameras. And even IF true reality is being shown on the cameras...how interesting would it be, and how likely would TV producers want to fund such shows? Fact is, real life isn't really that interesting much of the time...

I hope not. People can't be that stupid. --can they?
