  • There are two kinds of performers: 1 those who USE the music to display their technical prowess, and 2 those who use their technique to display the inner values of music. Too many a violinist or violin fans forget this. Heifetz makes a good example of the first kind, and Grumiaux of the second. Great performers usually specialize in a music period, or composer. That is what happens with great pianists, conductors or great singers. When assessing the caliber of any seasoned or late performer, ask yourself the question> What is the repertoire he/she is best at? That must be clearly answered, often times by the performer him/herself. But if the answer is "he is the best at showpieces or Paganini, well then you are in front of a virtuoso of the first kind, more at ease with the show than with the art of music.
