Many of the vast breeds of penguins are nocturnal. Spending daytimes at sea fishing and living social life at night.

They have to be since many times of the year it is dark all the time at the South Pole so they need to be able to function well at night time.

Penguins are, for the most part, diurnal. However since most penguins live in Antarctica where the day is 6 months long it's hard to describe them in the usual terms of diurnal/nocturnal. Emperor penguins, for example are active the whole summer while they stay snuggled together the whole winter. They take short naps like most birds and never really sleep for more than a few minutes at a time.
