Speed, expressed as a fraction of the speed of sound in which the object (usually an aircraft) is moving, The soeed of sound changes with air pressure and temperature, falling at altitude. Mach 2.0 means traveling at twice the speed of sound, which will be a lower speed at altitude than at sea level, It is useful because a number of aerodynamic problems occur as Mach 1.0 is approached and passed, and it is helpful to be able to discuss them without needing to specify exact speed, altitude etc.
