When there ceases to be activity in the brain, usually measured by the lack of electrical activity in the brain.

I had to explin this to a few lawyers and family members a few times at work. Brain death is the irreversible end of all brain activity. This means basically your brain will not do anything ever again and your life is being supported my machines iif your are in the hospital. It's different from clinical death which basically means your heart has stopped and you are no longer breathjing on your own. Once you are determined to be brain dead there is only a matter of time before clinical death occurs, it could be seconds it could be hours. But Basically the person is dead.
