I think Betamax was really the better of the two, smaller better quality but it just never got the backing that VHS did for some reason.
sled or the wheel
gas or electic
8 track or cassett
Beta or VHS
DVD or Blu-ray
I owned both. Betamax was better. Better quality and the smaller size tape was easier to store.
Absolutely Betamax. Smaller, much better quality. I still have a nice Hi-Fi Betamax and a Betamax projector (which is so much fun to play with).
Wasn't Betamax the best but VHS had more pornographic films?
Does anyone use a vcr? what format?

While recording, the electricity went out. Now, the vcr records snow. TV is fine. Checked connections, all is fine? What else do I check?

I have a Samsung VCR which plays tapes properly except for 1 tape. It shows up with a blue screen

Does anybody still have a VCR and use it? Is it still working?

Would a blank S-VHS tape be able to be used in an older VCR for recording and/or playback?

Time to let go of that anger, Bagpuss! :)
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
yes.. out with hate in with love.. just my luck, I'll get a blue-ray player and they will come up with a new 'yellow' ray or somesuch... b*st*rds!!!
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
Isn't that the way it always goes? Cd's are becoming outdated now for MP3's and music DVD's; I still like my LP's. I'll bet they come up with something like MP3's for movies too like fire wire sticks *~*

I'll never sell my vinyl. Have managed to collect the entire Pink Floyd back catalogue all in Vinyl! If they make record-players obselete I will campaign...
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
Someday all media will be delivered via Mystnet(tm), a yet-to-be-invented hyperspace medium of infinite bandwidth, zero cost, and perfect fidelity. Every other thing we own will be obsolete, and we'll be charged a flat rate of $4.95/month for access to everything ever recorded or performed.
If you'd like to buy stock now, just drop me a PayPal transaction of $500 per share... operators are standing by.
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
hehehehehe.. very astute SB... You will be like a space age Bill Gates!... Where do I sign? This got me thinking... If, one company DOES monopolise the entertainment medium the way that the aforementined Mr Gates has the O/S market, Wouldnt that render games consoles and games, antiques of the future? I will put half a dozen PS2's in the loft!
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
LOL!!! That's great Stableboy!
Bagpuss, I'll never sell my vinyl either and I'll be campaigning with you!

"antiques of the future" wins Catchphrase of the Day.
I embarrassedly admit that I have no idea what happened to my vinyl. At one time, I had quite a few LPs, and I'm at a total loss to account for their disappearance. Apparently I thought there would be no place for them in the future. :(
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
aaaw sad news.. loss of vinyl is worse than loss of hair for some old hippies around here you know... ;-)
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
I have a feeling that the disappearance of the vinyl is connected with a previous lifestyle which valued chemically altered mental states over inventory control.
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
grooovy... true... lol SB they would have been s p a c e d for sure..
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
Agreed! I read an article about how vinyl is making a comeback! Seems us old hippies have something to look forward too. The article says that CD's are going the way of the 8 track (I have a bunch of those too) and being replaced by MP3's for mobile use and LP's are being rediscovered because of the sound quality for home use.
I also agree that "antiques of the future" wins Catchphrase of the Day!

Well I'm sorry, but I can't endorse the return of LPs as a primary medium. I remember how much effort it took to keep them clean, and how easily they scratched despite that effort, and how annoying it was to listen to hiss and scratches and ticks and... really, the whole idea of having the encoded information exposed to open air like that is quite obsolete. A CD format with higher sampling rates can easily whip the butt of an LP for sound quality, if there's enough demand for it. I doubt that the nostalgia of us oldtimers is going to have much effect on the market, as the target music consumer is the 16-30 group.
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
very true, the youth just want smaller, less fuss, more features, left brainwork required, operation.. Shame though, buying a brand new record and rushing home to play it was a real good vibe...

Here's a the URL of the article; it's pretty interesting:

wow thats what i meant! good find!
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
Well somebody's sniffing something, I think. The masters are all digital now, so any "warmth" of vinyl can be attributed directly to sampling rate issues: the vinyl can't be any warmer than the master datastream, yes? Or is someone threatening to bring back analog mastering as well? Who is going to ramp up those old production lines?
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
I think there is a massive rise in vinyl sales due to the realisation that no amount of digital wizardry will be able to re-produce the 'naturally flawed but very retro and rock n roll' feel of vinyl... There is no soul in a CD player or a rack-mounted midi controller...
by Mr n Mrs M... on December 26th, 2007
Yeah, I can see that -- the whole experience of playing music is different. This isn't a bunch of sensitive-ear audiophiles detecting subtle differences in sound quality, it's a fashion or aesthetic movement rooted in what it "feels like" to flop a vinyl disk on the turntable, read the liner notes, watch it spin around, etc.
Does this mean I don't get the Mystnet(tm) investments?
by Stableboy on December 26th, 2007
Check's in the mail but it might bounce around for a bit ;0)
by Prime wants the old AB back on December 26th, 2007
lol for that reason i'm out of the contract SB... :-)
