He was from Virginia and one of the leaders of the Sons of Liberty (along with Samuel Adams), Americans countering the British acts against the colonies. A great supporter of American independence, he helped organize boycotts of British goods to pressure the British Parliament to remove their various oppressive tax acts. He gave the famous "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" speech in the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1775. He later opposed the adoption of the Constitution (1787) for fear of having too strong a central government.
