Not nesseseraly. It can be a bad violin, it can also be a good violin. it also depend on for what you want to have that violin. If you want to buy it to learn how to play you dont need an instrument that is the same standard as someone who will play concerts with it. A violin for 1000 dollars is in any case NOT a hand build instrument. (unless you struck gold and have a really really good bargain on your hand) it is probably made in a violin factory in Asia.

I'm assuming you mean a full-sized violin; fractional sizes are cheaper and if you are small enough to need a fractional size you probably wouldn't be asking this. A $1000 dollar violin is generally a basic student level violin. If that's what you need, then no, it's not a bad violin. As an intermediate student (after playing for about 5 years), my violin outfit (violin plus bow, case, etc.) was about $2500, the violin making up about $2100 of that. As an advanced student (I've been playing for 11 years now), my current violin is worth about $5500. My teacher (a professional) has a violin worth about $250,000.
