  • A Fictional Hero.
  • The short answer.. Beowulf is an Old English heroic epic poem of anonymous authorship. It has risen to national epic status in England. In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists.
  • As well as hand-to-hand combat, he takes on monsters, has no compunction about killing women, even though she was an evil hag living in a stinking lake, and at the end, when he is King of the Greats, he battles the dragon alone, which he kills with the help. He is mortally wounds in the battle, and his death marks the decline of the Greats, who are now surrounded by enemies made in previous campaigns. Consequently, the poem ends in mourning for both Beowulf and his nation. EPIC!
