  • For those who do not know, the R 101 Airship is actually a large blimp. It was designed in the late 1920's and crashed during one of its first flights in 1930. It was designed and built in Great Britain. It was a very lavish and luxurous passenger carrier but also had some military purposes because it was capable of carrying five bi-planes which it was supposed to launch from onboard. Supposedly, these planes were then able to return to the Airship and re-attach themselves to be hoisted back inside. I don't believe this was ever accomplished. Since only one was built and it sadly crashed on its first long flight across the ocean, I know of no others being built. During its building and especially after the crash, multiple design flaws were discovered. Problems also arose with the hydrogen powered cell, ultimately determined to be the cause of the explosion and crash.
