  • As I have an ex bf who is rather a piece of shit currently calling a prison home I'd say both!
  • I don't know what the answer is. Something is terribly wrong with our society when prisons fill up like this.:(
  • I would definitely say that prison should be more uncomfortable. Start there and build more if needs be.
  • Make the time harder.
  • We need to stop treating prisoners so well. My brother-in-law lost his wallet when he was spending a tour of duty in a country where they chop off the hand of thieves. When he retraced his steps, he found his wallet lying on the sidewalk outside a store he had been in. None of the money nor his credit cards had been touched. I'm not necessarily saying that we have to cut off hands, but I don't think prisoners need color tv, gyms, libraries and other items to pleasantly occupy their time.
  • I think we need to look at who we are imprisoning, and who we aren't. People who use hard drugs need help, not incarceration. People who sell pot should not be imprisoned. People who rape and kill and steal should be imprisoned. But look at the news: sex predators get out after a few months, while someone sells weed and gets nailesd 3X - Life imprisonment! Crazy, expensive system!
  • I think prisons should be more comparable to concentration camps or POW camps. For some, prison is better than home. Make the idea of going to prison horrific, that would deter crime.
  • Ever wonder what the average educational level is of those in prison? What's the objective of prison? What should it be? I'd say currently it's a holding pen for punishment. I think it should be rehabilitation to the degree possible. I think the answer is more and better education in the earlier years and better rehab if they get to prison. A multifaceted problem . . . no simple answer as I've shown right here, lol!
  • No. We need less prisons. And less stupid laws to lock people up under.
  • We need fewer prisons and more treatment centers. In California, more and more people are going to prison for drug related offenses, and many, many people are there because the are mentally ill. California closed all its mental hospitals several years ago, and the problem just keeps getting worse and worse. There are very few state run substance abuse centers.
  • No we don't need more prisons. We need more effective ways to handle and prevent crime. And to address the second part of your question...make them more unpleasant? first off...prison is already an unpleasant place to be...I see somewhere above that you have stated that they are like "hotels" this statement makes me think that you might just be watching too much tv. thinking that they are like 'hotels" is most certainly a result of misinformation and a lack of knowledge as to what really goes on in prisons in this country. I also think that the argument that prisons are worse in other countries is invalid...inhumane treatment of prisoners is not something to aspire to.
  • I think we should move towards an 'escape from new york' type system, where criminals are just dumped somewhere isolated and forced to get on with it.Of course on 24 hour cctv for the viewers amusement. Now THAT would be entertainment. p.s Just imagine..serial killers v rapists, live on pay per view.
  • why should we have more? it allready shows the fear that we have to our own people, the united states has more prisons than any other contry in the world. that's call Insecurity! cause we are getting out of control? it means that we need a better leader.
  • Punishment should fit the crime. But, I've asked this question in a comment already, who decides? Consider while you are thinking about that, that the punishment is more a comment on the behavior and attitudes of the punisher than he who is punished. Consider too that I have zero difficulty with the death penalty. I have personally met people who would be better off dead. Better off for themselves, better off for society. But, if we take someone out of the gene pool for a crime they have committed, then we also need to take out of the gene pool every person in the chain who contributed by action or inaction to that person's crime. Chew on that one for awhile, and ask yourself, "Have I contributed?"
  • Both. The new prisons should be every bit as unpleasant as the old ones. We also need to put many more people in there. I would say that it should be mandatory for at least 85% of the population to visit those lovely institutions of rehabilitation at least once in their life time
  • The USA's justice system is badly messed up. The USA comprises only 5 percent of the world's population but has 25 percent of the worlds prisoners. In this country, you have a much greater chance of being put in prison for a crime that you did NOT commit than being a victim of terrorism. In 2001 alone, over 700,000 people were arrested not for killing or raping, but for smoking marijuana. This country doesn't need more prisons, it needs a more enlightened judiciary. references: http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/04/23/america/23prison.php http://skeptically.org/recdrugs/id8.html
