From what I have read, it doesn't hurt to do it. However, the need to do it usually means you need more toning-type stretching exercise.

I hate it when a joint cracks, you have to mess about try to wind more paper round it and licking it... nightmare....

it's not bad. thats an old wives tale because use to gross moms out so they made lies to scare their children into not doing it. it's perfectly healthy actually. i forgot the science behind it but u can google it.
