As someone who was there recently- "Nothing, at the moment. But I'm looking!" ...and then launch into a half-hour description of how the process has gone so far... So I wasn't that fun to be around when I was unemployed! So sue me!:)

It's important to show that you haven't been idling your time away. Maybe demonstrate that you have been doing some voluntary or charitable work, looking after a sick relative (if that's the case) or a course of study to improve your employment prospects whilst applying for jobs and knocking on a lot of doors of potential employers.

I say I'm currently looking for employment. Actually, as of Friday I can say "I'm looking for something permanent, but I'm substitute teaching in the mean time."

State your last job or your current skill.

I am looking for employment

I'll answer honestly and say that I'm collecting disability checks. If a person can't tell that I'm disabled, by my mannerisms, by the way I walk, by the way I look, then that person is not worth my time.

Some people say they are a consultant. I am never unemployed, because I have my own business. There is nothing like being an entrepreneur. You can take time off or a sabbatical or do some retraining. Enjoy your freedom. Congratulate yourself on it. God didn't make you with a job. He made you with a purpose. Find it. Take the time to consider your options, if you can, and make the best of it. Worst case, you can always say you work for a temp agency. If you want something more romantic, be a philosopher, a student of the universe, or a writer or full time philanthropist!

you can say that you are between jobs, say what you have done in the past or plan to do in the future. some people say that are advising or consulting as they look for new employment... then there is always the stay at home mom or dad or retired persons...
