What is the best way to try and survive if the elevator you are in starts plummeting 40 storeys to the ground?

Sadly, there's not much you can do but pray. If the elevator is free-falling, the speed it will achieve just after 4 seconds would be 40 meters per second or 90 mph. The impact with the ground below would be tremendous. Don't even consider the thought of jumping a split-second before hitting the ground (if somehow you had a way of knowing when to do it), that's no good either. http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae54.cfm

Ok dont laugh is this is a stupid answer ok?? : ) I would take off all my clothes off ,jacket,pants sweater,anything I was wearing for the day put them down on the floor for a cushion get in a ball where the clothes were at and brace for impact put briefcase or purse on top of head for falling debis,now if I dint make it I might look odd after someone got the doors open but at least I tryed.

I heard once that you are suppose to start jumping up and down... Not sure why... I guess hoping when it crashes you are in the up position. That is the only thing I can think of.

Well you could all try to collectively piss, maybe fill the elevator with a liquid to help stop personal injury.
