If you factor price in, it depends on your level, budget, and personal preference. Personally, I have a small violin (sort of a mini full-size) with a relatively bright sound ($5,500); my best friend has a stronger, deeper-sounding violin ($20,000). We each prefer our own instruments. If you're above beginner level, you really have to go to a shop and try out instruments, and if you can, take a couple home for a few days and practice on them.
