Why is a car worth less than the sum of its auto parts?

    You are comparing the value of the auto parts as purchased new, with the value of the used car parts in your car. A new car has more value than a used one but even when it is new, due to the eficiencies of an automated assembly process and market competition, the new car is less costly than the sum of its after market parts. Aftermarket autoparts are "marked up" more than a new car.
