Actually... that's a HUGE misconception, brought on by novel writers. Pirates boarded other people's ships raided them, or raided towns, and promptly spent all their findings on cheap pleasures. There's never been a recorded instance of buried "pirate's treasure" with the map and curse and all... Pirates weren't exactly the kind of people to open a Savings' Account.
