The ideal cheap way, yet to be "hacked", would be a DVD-R that could be inserted and take control of the system, ie. boot a Linux operating system. The famed Xbox hacker, Andrew Huang, was interviewed by O'Reilly Press about his exploits and hacks for the Xbox system. http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2003/09/11/bunniehuang_interview.html In this interview, "Bunnie" indicates problems about reverse-engineering the Xbox and possible conflicts with DMCA http://www.loc.gov/copyright/legislation/dmca.pdf The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (signed by President Clinton in 1998) His book, "Hacking the Xbox" would be your first, and best step in preparing your game system to accept music CDs and pirated software. In all current possibilities, you're still left with the fact that you'll have to dismantle the box, add a "modchip" to bypass security, and install your own operating system. You can also do an online search on "Xbox Hacks" to locate the materials needed for this task. Or buy a PC.

Well, at the risk of being repetitive, "modchip"! You can buy a very capable modchip for less than $25. That modchip will let you FTP game files from the Xbox dvd-rom drive to your pc, for burning to writeable DVD media, and eventual play on your Xbox. There are several modchip choices available to you, and they all have their fans. Naturally, the more expensive chips will give you more capabilities, but for simply making and playing backups of your games, the sub-$25 modchip will work just fine. Do a google for "xbox mod chips" and you'll find the online stores.

Use a CD-RW instead, and select a slow burning speed. (2x-4x)

modding your xbox doesn't mean it will read burnt CDs. you have to have the right DVD drive. Thomsons read cd-rw, but not cd-r. Phillips read some cd-r but not all. Samsungs B version will read anything you put in them, but the A and F won't read cd-r.
