  • The problem is how cold the soil is. If the soil will not freeze you could plant bulbs now, but when it is this cold any nondormant plant would have some cold shock. Most plants in flower would not make it. Maybe a hardy mum. Maybe if you mulched it very very well. A dormant plant might make it. But its roots probably won't have a chance to grow much and keeping it watered would be a problem. Mulching would be very important as well. I've heard of people putting live Christmas trees in their house for a few days in Dec and plant outside in Jan. You might need to have already dug the hole. Where can you get plants this time of year to plant?
