This depends on the type of school that you are taking the class from. For instance, the Alabama school of ballet requires attire in certain colors depending on the class you are in. You should contact the school and ask the attire requirements. However, most schools usually require some form of tank, tights, and ballet shoes for females and a leotard or fitted T shirt and tights for males.

I agree with the above- it never hurts to call and ask. For girls/women, it's usually pink tights and a black leotard (or the colour the studio specifies) and ballet shoes. Also, hair should be in a bun, pulled away from the face and neck. Your studio may allow you to wear a shirt or wrap during warm up, but after stretching, you'll be expected to take it off so that the teacher can check the alignment of your body and your posture. For men, usually a tank top, mens dance tights (thick), a "dance belt" for support under the tights, and ballet shoes. Like hwilliams12199 said it all depends on what dance school u go to cause they all have their difference of proper attire that they want their students to wear. but as general goes its pink tights , a leotard , ballet slippers , hair pulled back on a ponytail or something like it. This is all my knowledge of a female in a dance school ! :) All so get ur self sometype of dance bag to put some snacks in & water & all ur ballet , jazz or tap shoes on if u are taking one class!

We wore tights and ballet slippers and leotards at Julliard. Also, cut off tights and no slippers were some times used - easier to grip the floor. Leotards allow form to be seen and mistakes also!

Call for dress code. If there is none and you are a female, black cami leo & pink tights and ballet slippers. I recommend leather slippers for a beginner instead of canvas. It will work your foot harder. If you are a guy, white or black ballet tee shirt, dance belt,black tights, white socks with white or black ballet slippers.

My class is co-ed. The girls wear a pink leotard and bare feet and no tights. Us guys is a dance belt under a black leotard, no tights and bare feet. It was hard to get used to wearing the leotard for the first few weeks, but now its just part of the class.

It ALL depends on the school. For example, at my school we have to wear tights that vary from class to class, but we always have to wear the school's uniform bodysuit. It would be wise to ask about it. However, if you have no way of knowing, I would show up with pink convertible tights and a black bodysuit if I were a girl. Sorry, I don't know about what guys wear.
