"Generally speaking, when you rent a car, the liability coverage limits you have in your own auto insurance policy remain in effect with the same limits. In addition, the comprehensive and collision coverages you have in your own auto insurance policy remain in effect with the same deductibles." www.carinsurance.com

If you are confident you will not wreck it, then the insurance is a waste of money.

The supplemental insurance removes you from having any liability at all, there are two types: Collision damage waiver and full insurance. What most rental car companies don't tell you is if you use a Platinum credit card for your security for payment, it covers you for your deductable. In that case, you don't need to buy the collision damage waiver. If you are renting for a short period of time, I recommend that you buy the full coverage. If there is an accident that is your fault, you don't have to use your own insurance and risk the possibility of having points charged against your policy and possibly raising your rates. Pretty cheap against a 3-5 hundred dollar increase per policy period.

Check to see if your existing auto policy contains coverage for a rental car, esp collision. If so, you may wish to waive addl coverage, especially if you can afford to pay the deductible out-of-pocket, if necessary.
