Is there a proper way to engage/disengage the 4-wheel drive on a 2002 Ford Ranger (besides just pushing the button on the dashboard)?

i believe you have to be in neutral and if you drive manual be sure to release the clutch. then press the button. if you were going forward you may need to go in reverse for 10 feet (3 meters) and it should click back into 2 wheel.
