Honestly and to their face. Breaking up with someone is serious business and it deserves a serious and sincere approach. My opinion is that you should have the decency to meet the person face to face and just tell them that the relationship is not working out and that you will not be dating them anymore. You leave yourself open to an emotional response and discomfort, but if you have been in a REAL relationship with this person you just deal with it and walk away from it. I've never regretted breaking up with a woman to her face, regardless of the backlash. I did the right thing, showed the proper respect, and was not a coward. I can respect myself afterwards and don't have to feel like I did her wrong.

Although there really isnt a good way to break up, I'd say that I have experienced the best way. I was spending the night with my girlfriend, and we talked face to face and I was so heartbroken, but she held me while I was crying and all that, so somehow it made it a little better.
