  • No, it is not. A military salute is a greeting accorded to those who are or were engaged in the profession of arms and then only for those who have not disgraced themselves and the profession (Military prisoners, for example, are not permitted to render a salute for any reason.). Aside from being a gesture of respect, it is also an expression of brotherhood. If you didn't earn the right to salute, don't do it.
  • Not inappropriate. Military people salute. Civilians wave. It is an acknowlegement of the other. Agree to the above.
  • I think when I am saluted by a civilian it is the civilian taking pride in the US. So by all means salute.
  • I would recommend a two fingered(index and middle) accompanied with a head nod as an aknowledgement. A proper salute should be reserved to be rendered by military personelle, SecDef, and PotUS.
