Yes they are. They run, and they are animals, just like us.
-
No, they are abused animals.

Sort of. An athlete is a physically active individual training for or participating in an amateur, educational or professional athletic sport. That could be a horse. They are individuals:-)

Of course. They're overworked underpaid fed-up and tired.

You're opening a can of worms on this one. Yes, they are athletes-as to them being overworked the majority of their time is spent resting HOWEVER; They are started out in extremely hard work very young before their growth plates are done closing. Most of the horses apart of big barns don't get turnout which makes for some very cranky ponies and stall vices such as cribbing, weaving, etc. Horses like to run My own horse, after having two days off in a row last week nearly dumped me when I would not let him run and he started to buck and rear-I wouldn't let him go forward, he didn't want to go backwards and the only way he could go where he could release some energy was up. There are some barns that are creating a more natural situation for horses where they are turned out in herds and their shoes are pulled creating less impact on the legs. Check out Canterusa.org - a big thoroughbred rehoming site where the racing trainers resell them-you'll see many of them are retired early due to injuries, being too slow, or simply not enjoying it. My friends horse was retired early because he simply would not leave the start gate :)

These athletes are young but are retired early so that they have a life after racing if they are not already broken down...
