Single-breasted, black barathea coat, with a black silk shawl collar, the coat closing with a single button, and double buttons on the cuffs, with real buttonholes. (The coat should not shine. Beware of mohair.) The trousers (pants) should be of black barathea, with narrow black silk braid on the outer seams of the legs. The trousers should be without turn-ups. The trousers should be worn supported only by braces (suspenders). You should wear a white Marcella dress shirt with a separate collar attached with studs, (absolutely not a winged collar with a dinner jacket) and closed in front with small evening studs, and with double cuffs, closed with discreet cufflinks. Do not wear a cummerbund. On your feet wear black socks without clocks, lace-up black patent leather shoes. You will tie your own black bow tie, and do it sloppily enough to show everybody that it wasn't bought made up. If you depart from these instructions in any detail you will look like a gangster or a Hollywood filmstar, and everybody will laugh at you.
