I would bet pretty strongly that maternal instincts are biological. The question is not whether they are biological, but how they are turned on.They may not be turned on in all biologically female people, or turned on to different levels. And they may be turned on in males as well as females.

Another forum described, rather nicely, sexuality as havin at least three components:

What's between your legs: your physical sex
What's between your ears: the sex you think you are
Who's between your legs: the sex to which you are attracted,

Eahc of us have all three, and the lucky ones have a matching set. But to which of the set maternality is attached, if it is not an independent variable, I do not know.

I don't think so. You know I think it's phsychological, but not necesarrily social. My mom wouldn't know maternal if it bit her on the ass. That was the example I grew up with, but I think I do a much better job with my boys than she ever did with me or my brother.

I think it's all of the above...the urge is quite biological but social factors can influence it as well. If all your friends and families start having children and you want children, the urge may be stronger.

I think it is hormonally induced and biological. The minute the baby is born they usually kick in.

I have wondered that myself. I have never had any desire to have babies but my sister would still love to have another one and she is way too old and has had a hysterectomy even.
