Which car is safer? An older model Toyota Forerunner (a fairly heavy SUV) without airbags, or a newer, smaller car (like a Ford Focus) with airbags?

Smaller car. I tend to stay away from Fords, but that's besides the point. All the new safety regulations, advancements, etc make newer vehicles better on fuel, better on the road, safer, etc. If the toyota doesn't have airbags then it's probably around 15yrs old. Therefore, maintenance savings alone would justify the newer vehicle.

Older car, they used to build cars like tanks. Now they are tinny little pieces of junk that rip apart like tinfoil when we have accidents.
