  • You've probably figured it out by now, but yes, you can get away without using doggy diapers. The blood isn't like a woman's period blood, but instead more of a clear pinkish liquid. It is still blood though and will stain any fabric left untreated. So keep a sharp eye and a good spray stain remover handy. She doesn't know what's going on, and doesn't want to fail you with a mess in the house. She will be obsessive about keeping herself clean, endlessly licking her swollen vulva. She will probably do a wonderful job, and you might not see any spots, but seeing your dog worry with this might break your heart! Give her the relief of some rest at bedtime and diaper her. Of course, this will also protect the bedding and keep you from that worry, plus allow you to sleep without having to hear her licking and suffering with cleaning all night. She'll be in heat about 3 weeks, and unless she gets pregnant (prime time is about week 2) or "fixed" when her heat is over (usually safe about a week after heat is over), she's gonna go through this all over again in about 6 months. Good Luck!
