  • I can't remember whom but there was a famous composer was once offered a position at a university and had the choice of Theory or Composition. He replied, to the university's astonishment "Theory". They asked why as a famous composer he would choose this. He replied, more or less, "theory can be taught and is an invaluable tool but composition comes straight from god." (NB as an atheist I disagree but you could substitute "inspiration" or whatever.) I think the point is learn your trade as best possible but then the beauty of any music you make will come from inside you not from mechanical application of theory. :)
  • Composing is not easy. But if you are talented enough to do it, then go for it! And put yourself out there as much as possible!
  • i say dont force it. every song or riff or solo i made has come from inside, moreso like my soul talking, either out of nowhere or when i was just messing around jamming and such. i dont think you can sit down and say im gonna write this kind of song and gonna put this type of riff into it. it just comes out, some ppl have it some dont is all i can say.
  • If you want music theory to be easy when you are taking composition in a classroom full of students, I would suggest that you have a piano background. Piano students have better concepts of the rules which composition requires to compose, because they can visually see how music fits on the staff. Piano notes are stacked up like they are on paper, going from left to right. The piano students are able to write and then play their compositions right away to see if the songs sound right to them.
